Leeds v West Tyneside
3 3
Leeds welcomed West Tyneside to St Teresa's, a change of venue due to the perma frost at Rodellian's. West Tyneside took an early lead after a bright start from Leeds, forcing a free kick a third of the way into the Leeds half, the ball played into the penalty box took an unwelcome bounce off the hard surface deceiving the goalie Stephen kerr, and ending up in the back of the Leeds net .Leeds 0 W Tyneside 1
Leeds were soon back in it, after some good work by Matt Wilson on the right. Being in the right place at the right time is a difficult art to perfect but Adam Todd seems to have mastered it and was there to meet Matt's pinpoint cross to level the scores Leeds 1 - W tyne 1
Leeds went into the break two goals to the good, thanks to superb strikes from Rennal Edwards, the first a true strikers finish taking the ball early to leave the defence and goalkeeper looking for someone to blame, the second a crashing volley into the roof of the net after a one two with Marc Brook. West Tyneside though were always in the hunt, the difference between the two teams, Sam Hashmi with a fearless display at the heart of the Leeds defence
The second half saw Leeds on the back foot as West tyne pressed to get something from the game, their strong running No 9 causing all sorts of problems for the Leeds defence his firece shot parried by Tom White who got down quickly, but thier No 16 was the first to react to hoist the ball in to net.
With 5 minutes to go West tynes captain made a determined run into the Leeds box a defensive error allowing a penalty to take place. 3-3
A thoroughly entertaining game of football and an advertisement for Leeds and West Tyneside's Schools football, the skills and commitment on show here today were exemplary.
Leeds V Barnsley 4 0
Barnsley came to Rodillian looking to reverse a 3-1 home defeat suffered at the hands of Leeds and for the first ten minutes nothing much happened, both teams weighing each other up, like two cagey boxers, trading blows in midfield. Leeds gradually gained the upper hand with Sam Dibb and Sam Anderson supporting the attack up the flanks, Sam Hewitt and Sam Hashmi working in tandem to nullify the Barnsley attack. Barnsley were on the ropes and it wasn't long before Leeds opened the scoring with a deft lob over the keeper from Joe Wingfield running on to a through ball from Matt Wilson. Adam Todd who was to prove a constant thorn in the side of Barnsley's defence, cut inside from the right and had a stinging shot saved by the goalie. Barnsley were down ,but not out and kept looking to hit Leeds on the break their number 10 shaping to shoot when in the clear, fooling the defence and instead crossing to find his number nine. whose first touch let him down, eventually dragging the ball wide with only the goalie to beat, a let of for Leeds, who took full advantage Jack Griffith turning the ball in after Adam Todd had won a free kick on the right with a clever turn and then providing the cross, Leeds2 Barnsley 0.Leeds pressed for a third Matt Wilson making room for a shot which the goalie could only palm out to the opportunistic Adam Todd to slide the ball home Leeds 3 Barnsley 0.
The second half was a tighter affair with Barnsley looking to salvage something from the tie and indeed could have done, their two forwards missing two clear cut chances, but with Craig Tonkinson Jonathon Daniels and Dylan Howell working hard in midfield, Barnsley were never allowed to settle and a long crossfield ball from Sam Hewitt found Joe wingfield on the left wing who had the confidence to execute a Maradonna turn(becoming his trademark) to go past the defender and deliver a pinpoint cross, Adam Todd again on hand to place the ball in the back of the net Leeds 4 Barnsley 0
On another day Barnsley might have taken their chances, nevertheless this was a mature performance from Leeds who worked hard to get the ball, but more importantly worked harder to keep it.
Leeds V Bradford
1 2
They say revenge is a dish best eaten cold, how Bradford must have enjoyed their mid-day meal. This was a different team from last years beaten semi finalists, bigger, stronger, and faster.
Right from the kick off Bradford were at the Leeds defence, Jake Sanders impressive working to keep them at bay with a series of incisive tackles. Leeds were finding it difficult to get out of their own half and it came as no surprise, when after a series of poor clearances the ball fell to Bradford's no 9 who calmly dispatched the ball into the home net Bradford 1 Leeds 0.
Bradford are a big team but not a bunch of cloggers and were playing some good possession football and it was 20 minutes before Leeds mounted a meaningful attack Bradfords defence caught napping by Sam Dibbs long clearance releasing Matthew Wilson for a run on goal, Bradford's Luke Johnson getting back to make a goal- saving tackle Leeds threatened briefly with Dylan shooting just over the bar from a corner, but in truth Bradford were dominant forcing a superb double save from Stephen Kerr and minutes later deservedly going two up just before the interval with a sweet left foot strike from their man of the match Elliot Holmes
I don't know what was said in the break but Leeds were a different proposition in the second half the defence and midfield sitting a lot tighter their opposite numbers. And the Leeds attack now causing problems for the Bradford defence. Jack Griffiths with a shot on goal, Adam Todd forcing a corner and Rennal planting a free header over the bar Sam Hewitt with a good through ball to Todd who crossed to Joe Wingfield narrowly failing to turn it in ,another corner, Joes header straight at the goalie. Still you sensed a goal was coming and it duly arrived in the shape of Jack Griffiths, picking up a slide rule pass from Dylan dropping his shoulder to shimmy past the last defender and expertly shooting across the face of the goal to give the goalie no chance.
Leeds pressed for the equaliser but Bradford were content to soak up the pressure hitting Leeds on the break, as the game edged towards full time it petered out as a spectacle Bradford content to sit on their advantage
Leeds were slow out of the traps today hopefully they have learnt the game starts when the ref blows his whistle
Leeds V Hull
4 1
It was cold, brass monkeys were forming an orderly queue at the lost property office as Leeds kicked of their league programme against visitors Hull.
Leeds were at their game from the kick off, forcing a corner in the first minute, Adam Todd delivering to the near post, Declan Keaney making a late run in front of the defence and glancing his header into the far corner of the net. Leeds 1 Hull 0
Declan Keaney and Adam Todd were combining well on the right hand side and it was this combination that led to the second goal, Declan Keaney's pass to Adam Todd unpicking the Hull defence, Todd finding Matt Wilson with an accurate cross Matt doing the honours, placing the ball in the net, if the chuckle bothers played football then this is how they would do it. Leeds 2 Hull 0
Leeds third goal was great solo effort by Matt Wilson ,picking up the ball in Hulls third and running at the defence, getting behind them and coolly sliding the ball under the goalie by the right hand post, just rewards for a player who kept the Hull defence on their toes throughout the game, always willing to show for the ball.
Things couldn't get better and they didn't, just before the interval Hulls number 10 helped himself to a fine headed goal from a free kick ,after some rather generous defending by Leeds. Leeds 3 Hull1
Hull sensed the could get something from this game and produced a couple of promising efforts early on.
Jonathan Daniels is trickier than a bag full of tricky monkeys and drew a fould from the Hull defence in the box, a penalty which eventually ended up in the left hand corner of the net Leeds 4 Hull 1
Hull were without five key players today and met a Leeds team who simply had to much in their lockers for them to cope with.
Leeds U13 V Sheffield
5 0
A change of venue today, as Leeds entertained the steel city at the St Theresa ground on a pitch any professional would have been pleased to play on.
Leeds took the early iniative Dylan Horwell with a cheeky chip from outside the box beating the goalie but also the crossbar. Johnny Daniels having an injury free run was showing what hes, about, popping up everywhere, and had a big say in the first goal ,his mazy run on the right wing beating three defenders, laying the ball of to Jack Griffiths to do what he does best, sticking it in the onion bag, coolly putting it in the far corner. Leeds 1 Sheffield 0.
Jake Sanders in defence, a model of consistency and today was no different a good strong defender and intelligent user of the ball
Leeds controlled the first half and there were some champagne moments from them Joe Wingfield in particular executing a Maradonna turn on the right wing to leave the defender looking for his mum, and then crossing to Declan Keaney who swears blind that the goalie got a touch to it and that’s why he missed an open goal. Leeds went into the break not looking like they would concede, but also struggling to add to their tally
Cometh the hour cometh the man Marc Brook returning from injury and on as a second half substitute made an immediate impact picking up the ball 22 yards out hitting a right foot screamer into the top right-hand corner .Sheffield coudnt get into the game a solitary shot over the bar from long range their only effort on goal.
Knives sharpened Leeds went for the kill Sam Dibb crossing from the right, Matt Wilson on hand to steer the ball home Leeds 3 Sheffield 0
Marc Brook threading a pass to Declan Keaney who ran on shrugging of the attentions of two defenders to lash the ball left footed into the top right hand corner, Leeds 4 Sheffield 0.
Leeds hadn’t finished and there was an air of expectancy when Marc Brook picked up the ball 20 yards out on the right hand side with Leeds having two attackers in box and Sheffields defence stretched it would surly be another goal, to true, Marc looked up saw the attackers weighed up his options and then proceeded to thunder a right foot shot into the back of the net Leeds 5 Sheffield 0
